How to Make Your Commute to Work More Productive

Whether you drive, cycle, bus, bike or walk, the average person spends around 98 minutes commuting to work – that’s more than 300 hours a year. That said, your day-to-day commute to work needn’t be a complete drag.

Now you could squander your commute to work on social media, Candy Crush or weirdly breathing on people on the train, or you could take a look at our suggestions on how to make your commute to work somewhat more productive.

Create a Schedule

Successful people begin the day knowing what they want to achieve come 5:30pm.

Use your commute to work to decide on the two or three most important tasks for the day and plan on how you’re going to tackle them.

Complete your most important tasks in the morning when you’re fresh and energised – and don’t waste your energy on unimportant emails. Planning may not be the most explosive start to your day but, given you’re stuck on a train or in a car anyway, what else are you going to do.

Mix Up Your Transport

It’s easy to get stuck in a commuting rut – jumping on the same train, driving the same route or riding your bike every single day. While it may add more time to your commute, consider breaking up your monotonous routine.

By mixing up your morning routine, you’re sure to feel more creative and happier. So, maybe try mapping out a new bike or walking route or try catching an earlier train because, you know what they say, a change is as good as a rest.

Listen to an Interesting Podcast

For many, the commute to work is just part and parcel of travelling to and from work each day. How you use that time is, of course, up to you. However, listening to a podcast is a hands-free way to entertain yourself when travelling to work.

From inspirational and informative Ted Talks to interesting interviews and gleeful sketch shows, listening to a podcast is the perfect way to unwind before work – plus, it gives you something to look forward to in the mornings.

Our favourites include ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’, the gripping ‘Criminal’ and the hilarious ‘How Did This Get Made.’

Avoid the Commute to Work Altogether

The easiest way to enjoy your commute to work? Avoid it completely.

Now we know that not everyone can work from home, but, provided that you have the option, why struggle through the morning hustle and bustle when you could stay in bed. Indeed, over 70% of employees now work from home at least once a week.

So, the next time you have the option to work from home and avoid the commute to work, relax, unwind and begin your day from the comfort of your bed.

Relax and Prepare

Sneak in some meditation to help you start your day calm, refreshed and focused – as long as you’re not driving or riding a bike that is.

Even just a few minutes of contemplation and relaxation can reduce stress and improve concentration and memory. Plus, the good thing about meditation is that you don’t always need a fancy app or expensive gadgets – just disconnect, let your mind wander and float into work feeling zen.

Actively Seek Inspiration

What were you doing at 8:30 this morning? Let us guess, you were probably sloughing through the gut of people making their way to work; and already looking forward to 5:30.

Instead, why don’t you put your phone away, unplug your headphones and observe your surroundings and ponder the day ahead. Inspiration lurks around every corner.

Also, make sure to embrace randomness. Your commute to work may not be as banal and mundane as you think.
