The Shankly Hotel: Our Experience as an Autism Friendly Hotel

At Signature Living, we’re passionate about the experience we offer our guests and customers. We strive to ensure that everyone’s Signature experience is a special one.

In 2016, The Shankly Hotel became the first autism friendly hotel in Liverpool. And we’re setting out to spread the message, helping the city to develop a better understanding of this lifelong disability.

Our staff at The Shankly and the hotel’s Bastion Bar & Restaurant attended specialist training and awareness programs. This equipped our staff to develop the skills and understanding required to adapt and assist autistic guests and their families.

Recently, we had a lovely little boy and his parents join us for a stay at The Shankly. And our very own Adam Garvey was able to put his training to the test and engage appropriately and effectively, leaving plenty of smiles on faces!

So, we sat down with Adam to find out a little more about his training and most recent experience…

What does it mean to be an autism friendly hotel?

Basically, where it all started was when we got invited to a training session and when we went along there was a lady there and her son was autistic. She explained about how to deal with certain situations, coping with outbursts and things like that. Something that you would never ever know unless you lived with someone or knew someone with autism.

To work here knowing what we learnt, you can now see, things come to light now when guests come in and it’s being able to adapt to those guest’s needs so that they have the same experience as everybody else.

What did the training that you received involve?

It pretty much focused around her story of how she’s experienced her son growing up and noticed behavioural differences and things like that. And then obviously she was trained and went to mentoring on how to deal with her son and how to calm him down, just to make them as happy as they can be by learning more about what they need.

What happened with the little boy that came to The Shankly Hotel last week?

Yeah so, he was staying with his family because the hotel has jacuzzi baths. He can’t get a shower because he doesn’t like water on his head as it makes him distressed and things like that. Now, he was put into an accessible room, which only had a shower. On his booking, it wasn’t mentioned that he didn’t like showering, so we never knew this. They just presumed that every room had a jacuzzi.

So, when they came to the desk his mum told me about the situation, she wasn’t complaining, she was lovely. She just wanted to let me know that obviously he’s not had the experience that they thought he would. And straight away I knew he was autistic, before his mum actually told me.

Adam Garvey and our guests

To try and rectify the disappointment of him not having the jacuzzi, I thought how can I make it better? And then that’s when I spoke to the little boy and asked him what he likes. He said he really loves Toy Story. So his mum said they were going shopping for a bit and would be back to see me to pay the car parking. So I thought in that time frame, go out, get something for when he comes back.

And his little face when he came back! I just walked over with the Disney bag and he literally shot up off his chair. He didn’t even know what was in it, he was just really excited!

It’s so great that your training has helped you to recognise these things without having to be told…

Yeah, I think with illnesses and disabilities, you know, there’s loads of things that go on, that you don’t always know about. They’re not always visible. I mean we could have a guest in a wheelchair or on crutches and that’s visible. But with mental illnesses and things like that you just don’t know unless you’re told or trained on what to expect.

Is there anything you’d advise people to do to gain a better understanding of autism?

For me its so beneficial. Personally, I don’t know anyone who is autistic. So, for me, I was thinking whats the point. But that was the point. To be able to see a situation and notice it, that’s everything. His mum and dad were so surprised when I told them that I had been trained and that I knew how to deal with situations like it, they were over the moon. I knew how to speak to him and everything. They couldn’t believe it. And they were even more shocked that the Shankly is an autism friendly hotel, because it is something that is quite rare.

The Shankly was the first autism friendly hotel and there are a few more now in Liverpool, but it’s still very rare. Would you agree?

Yeah definitely. For us to get the certificate, I think there was about 50 of us that did the training and all of us where literally gob smacked with what was being said because you just don’t realise that these things go on.

What would you say the main skill is that the training gave you?

Just being able to make that guest happy. I now know how to communicate with that guest and how to be with them, whereas, before I could have said something totally wrong and could have upset him and thankfully that didn’t happen.

So, I think in the future, across all of our sites it would amazing if we could have that training. And you know, it wasn’t just me who would have seen that little boy, the housekeepers could have, the restaurant staff, so I think its important that everyone learns these skills.

Looking to the future, do you think this is something that should be implemented across all of our sites?

Yes definitely. Because I mean, that little boy will go home and tell is friends. His parents will tell other parents and it’ll start to sell itself really.

If you’re planning a stay with us and someone in your group is autistic, please don’t hesitate to get in touch beforehand and let us know of any particular requirements. Our team are always on hand to listen and assist.

In the meantime, why not check out our latest job vacancies? We’re always on the lookout for talented, hardworking staff with a Signature sparkle.

Brian and Derek - Kingsway House

Life After Kingsway House – Derek and Brian’s Story

In the winter of 2017, as Liverpool was facing a peak in the number of homeless and vulnerable people living on its streets, Signature Living opened a unique homeless shelter, Kingsway House.

It all started after Chairman of the company, Lawrence Kenwright, purchased Kingsway House earlier in the year and came face to face with the homeless crisis on a new and personal level. People had been using the building for shelter and warmth, the reality of the issue really hit home with Lawrence and he couldn’t turn them away.

With freezing temperatures and countless people in doorways, Lawrence Kenwright decided to make a change and open Kingsway House to everyone who needed help. During this time, he was approached by David O’Keefe, a self-confessed hippy stuck in a dead-end job, with enthusiasm he dreamed of putting into the city.

Together, David and Lawrence opened the doors to the vulnerable people of Liverpool and soon the residents of the shelter became a close-knit family. Two of these vulnerable residents have since become employed by Signature Living and now are the proud owners of a business.

Both Brian and Derek came to Kingsway House seeking shelter, warmth and a family. They found everything they needed, but sadly when the harshest months of winter were over, the shelter was forced to close after facing pressure from the council.

Brian and Derek - Kingsway House

Derek and Brian

Before Kingsway, Brian lived in a doorway on Old Hall Street, which was how he became known as Mr Old Hall Street. Always seen with his signature top hat and a friendly smile for every passer-by, Brian is famous in Liverpool. Derek is originally from Ireland, he travelled to Liverpool looking for work but after he broke his leg, he found himself vulnerable and in need of help. He heard about Kingsway House, met Brian and the rest is history.

The pair have now embarked on a new and exciting journey as entrepreneurs, so we sat down with them to discover what happened after the shelter closed and what life is like for them after Kingsway House.

Where did it all start with Signature?

Brian – I was living on the streets and was friends with David (O’Keefe). As the winter was getting closer, we were looking for someone like Lawrence who had property that could possibly help the homeless. We found Lawrence. He offered to let vulnerable people like us stay at Kingsway House, a building he had just bought.

Before we met him, we had never heard of Signature Living. But I’m so grateful to him. He’s such a great guy, I’m so glad we found him.

Derek – I was familiar with the hotels yeah. When I first came to Kingsway, it was a new experience for me you know. My aim was to help out as best I could and hopefully get a full-time job at the end and a place to live. And you know, it’s worked out well in the end.

What did you get from Kingsway that you didn’t get from similar shelters?

Brian – I’ve never actually been in other shelters, but I’ve heard stories about them. Kingsway House gave me hope and gave me confidence. It brought the real person out in me. I got love and respect from everyone at Kingsway, we were a family. And Lawrence knows everyone by name, he’s just a fantastic man, he made you feel part of it all.

Derek – When I came to Kingsway House, I was so happy with how different it was. Usually, at other shelters you have to do an assessment. They assess you, ask you lots of questions and decide whether you’ll be let in.

They might offer you a hostel from it, but not always. I was actually in another shelter a year ago because I had broken my leg playing football and needed help. When I first got there, I was assessed, and they told me I had to go back to Ireland. They even gave me a ticket. They said it was because had no connections in Liverpool and so they couldn’t house me.

But the difference with Kingsway was that they accept anyone in and there’s more fun in the hostel. They have music playing, there’s dancing, everyone gets on well as a family. I know there’s a lot of arguments as well but, you know, that’s family life!

You also got free meals three times a day, clothing donations and warm beds. Signature really made a difference and were fantastic in helping the homeless.

What happened after the shelter closed?

Derek – When the shelter closed a lot of people were disappointed because they made it their home. But, Signature did everything they could, they were obviously under pressure from the council and in the end, they had to close it.

Brian – It was sad to see. A few of the people have gone back to living on the street. When they first came into the shelter, they were ill and unhealthy, but when they came out they looked so good! I think some of them have gone back to their old ways now because there’s nowhere else for them to go.

Derek – But Signature did more than good for everyone, they really helped all the homeless people. They got them hostels, they gave around 15 of them jobs, they gave them every bit of support. They were fantastic.

Brian – Yeah, they gave them love.

And of course, you two are now entrepreneurs! What’s the best thing about owning your own business?

Brian – It’s fantastic, you know, because I get to tell him (Derek) what to do!

Derek – No you don’t!

Both laughing

Derek – No, of course it’s a proud moment and something that we never thought would happen. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime. It’ all thanks to Lawrence Kenwright and Sue Wright, they gave us the opportunity to get on our feet and really do well for ourselves.

So, we now run the car park and a cleaning business next to Kingsway House. We’re not going to become millionaires but we’re doing well!

As business owners we have been able to give a few more of the homeless people jobs and help out our friends who are in need. It’s been amazing and such a great opportunity for both of us.

Brian – It’s the best car park in Liverpool and the happiest!

Derek – And the cheapest! The car park is full every day by 8.30am, Monday to Friday and still does well on the weekend. From the money we made, we bought a jet wash machine, a proper petrol one so we can jet wash any cars that need it whilst they’re in the car park. All of our customers are more than happy with our work!

It sounds like an easy job, but it’s challenging. You need to be very organised. I know every customer that comes in, make sure I keep spots for staff and always treat the customers well every time.

Brian – He’s great at the business side and dealing with the customers. . . *singing* “He’s got personality, personality, personality.”

Lawrence and Brian

Brian and Lawrence Kenwright

What does your typical day look like?

Brian – Oh I just look forward to getting up every day now, being out with the people and having a laugh. I love making people smile. I’m just over the moon, I’m so happy. I’ve never been so happy in all my life.

Derek – I feel like I have my life back on track now, I wake up every morning and I’m glad for the routine. I appreciate what I have, I just hope I never find myself in the situation I was in ever again. I look forward now and not back. I just hope to keep on building what I have.

What’s your favourite thing about Liverpool?

Brian – The people. The people are fantastic, unbelievable. They saved my life when I lived in the doorway every day.

Derek – Definitely the people. The amount of generosity that was shown, the amount of food, clothes and bedding that was brought to the shelter was amazing. I find them similar to the Irish people, they’re outgoing, easy going, living to help others and that’s what Liverpool is all about and that’s the reputation they have.

Brian – Yeah, they talk to the homeless, they don’t ignore them. Everyone needs that little helping hand to get them off the streets and it’s just nice when you’re seen as a human being.

We know you like to have a dance Brian, what songs make you smile?

Brian – It’s got to be Street Life hasn’t it. Street Life by Randy Crawford. *sings* “Street life, it’s the only life I know.”

But I like loads of different kinds of music. I like going to raves and I like a bit of the eighties stuff.

What inspired the way you dress?

Brian – It’s so I can get noticed, you know, to highlight the homeless. I get a lot of people stopping me and saying, why’ve you got that suit on and I’ll say it’s for the homeless. Basically, that’s why I started wearing my top hat first. I’ve had my hat for over 12 months now, people never used to notice me, but with my hat they see me. It’s become my trademark now.

Derek – I need to get a signature look I think. I did have a dell boy hat, but I left it in the pub last week!

If you could all have a super power for one day, what would it be?

Derek – That’s a hard one, but I think I’d love to be able to fly. You could get to any destination you wanted so quickly, quicker than an aeroplane and cheaper! You could see the world and explore new places, that would be amazing.

Brian – I would want to be able to spread love. Everywhere and to everyone.

What are the best things people can do in Liverpool to help the homeless?

Derek – Give them food and clothing.

Brian – And speak to them, say hello to them. It’s not about money. You sit there for hours and hours and not one person says hello to you. Giving them money is the worst thing to do.

Derek – Yeah, a lot of homeless people have problems, addictions, so giving them money won’t help. The best thing you can do is give them warm clothing, food, bedding and material things that will help them to live. And obviously help them to find access to a shelter or help to open a permanent shelter for vulnerable people.

Brian – Being homeless is very lonely, it’s a lonely and sad world. I just think the government should do more, they don’t do anything.

Kingsway House

Kingsway House

What are your hopes for the future?

Derek – I’d like to continue what I’m doing, continue working hard and hopefully more opportunities will come up. We’re on a contract with Signature now, so I just hope it carries on.

Brian – My hopes are to have my own place, just be able to have a shower and all that in peace. And, of course, I’ll always carry on helping the homeless.

Derek – Yeah Brian is so brilliant with the homeless, he goes out every Tuesday and Friday and gives sandwiches out to them. They all stop and say ‘Hi Brian’ – he looks after them, he’s an ambassador for the homeless if you ask me.

And yeah, of course I dream about having my own place too, maybe down the road or something.

Brian – Make sure it’s down the road from me!

Derek’s a good cook you know.

Derek – Yeah, I like to cook anything and everything. I just cook the basics really, but I enjoy it. Maybe one day I’ll be a chef!

Kingsway House saw lots of people take a new path in life, with somewhere to live and a better support system. The shelter also offered more people the chance to gain a better understanding of homelessness in Liverpool.

At Signature Living, we are proud to help the vulnerable people of our city and do all we can to make Liverpool a safer and better place for the homeless. Brian and Derek have changed their lives around, they now have jobs and have accommodation. Our shelter gave the people of Liverpool a spark to make a change and we’ll continue to do all we can to help.

6 Ways to Check if an Employer is the Right Match for You

When you’re looking for a job, it’s easy to get caught up in worrying if you’re the right fit for a role. But what’s just as important during a job hunt is checking if the employer is the right match for you and the progression of your career.

Career satisfaction in the UK ranks as some of the lowest in the UK, with an estimated 47% of  employees regularly considering leaving their jobs in 2018.

If you’re offered a job, you should be thinking hard about whether you’ll be happy, comfortable and successful working for that company, otherwise you’re unlikely to enjoy the job! It’s important to check that the company you’re about to join with fits with your values, ethics and ambitions.

Here are some things to consider about when you’re deciding if an employer is the right fit for you…

Size of Company

Different people thrive in different environments. If you like being a big fish in a little pond, working for a multi-national co-operation that employs thousands of people probably won’t be a good match.

Employer right match

Equally, if you prefer a bit of anonymity at work, joining a start-up with 2 other employees might not be the best idea.

Before you take a job, consider what you’re looking for in a company and how its size will affect your career and your enjoyment of the role.

Company Culture

Companies come in all different shapes and sizes, and many have different methodologies, ethics and attitudes to overcoming challenges and moving the business forward. Make sure that the company you’re about to work for aligns with your values.

The best way to get a feel for a company’s atmosphere is to ask. During your interview, discuss aspects of the business’ working culture  with your interviewer: Do they have Friday drinks? Is it a hard-working office environment? Are they OK with flexibility of working hours?

If you’re keen to find out what the office environment is like, ask for a short tour at the end of your interview. It will help you get a feel for if it’s a social workspace or a studious, quiet office.

A great way to find out how a company operates is to simply search its name on google and check out any news articles about the firm – you’ll quickly get an idea on how other businesses perceive them as a brand and if you’ll feel comfortable working for them.

Office Location

Location is a key factor to consider when taking a new job.

If you enjoy lunch at a buzzing restaurant on a Friday, working in the suburbs is probably going to become tedious quickly. It might not seem important, but the environment around your office is where you’ll be spending most of your days –  so make sure to get a feel for that, alongside the office itself.

The Commute

The location is perfect, your future colleagues are friendly and the salary is excellent – but it’s going to take you an hour and a half to get to the office every morning.

It’s easy to brush the length of a commute under the carpet for what seems a perfect job opportunity, but the reality is that commuting times take their toll on both your working and home life.

A study by the University of the West of England found that every extra minute spent travelling to and from work reduces job and leisure time satisfaction and worsens mental health.

Your Work/Life Balance

If you’re successful in securing a job, you’re entitled to ask for a few days to think about it. Use that time to consider whether the career is what you want for your professional  development and if the intensity of the job will enrich your life.

In 2017, 53% of US employees stated that a role which allows them to have a greater work-life balance and better personal well-being was ‘very important to them’.

Some companies work long hours and repay with sustainable financial rewards – but money doesn’t buy happiness for everyone.

A job doesn’t have to be your whole life: consider your work/life balance and how the job will fit around your existing commitments.

Most companies are happy to be flexible – don’t be scared to talk options through with a recruiter!

Training

If you’re keen to progress in a career, make sure you check out what training your employer can offer.

In a 2017 study, a whopping 87% of millennials said that job-related training and development opportunities were a very important part of their decision to stay at a company

Attending in-house or external courses will boost your CV and make you a valuable asset that the company has invested in.

Always ask what opportunities are available at interview if you’re keen to develop as an employee and actively search for jobs that will allow you to fulfil your potential.

Signature Careers

It’s important to remember that no job is likely to tick all the boxes – but you should always feel 100 per cent comfortable that a career move is benefitting you as much as the employer.

Here at Signature Living we have maintained a strong set of visions and values since our inception in 2008 and we’re always looking for new additions to our friendly, vibrant and diverse team.

Our employees have been integral to building our incredible brand that exists today, and we’re confident that they’ve found the perfect match with us!

If you’re looking for a job in our city, don’t forget to check our vacancies pages to see if Signature might be the perfect match for you as well.

5 Tips for Securing Your Dream Graduate Job

From networking, to gaining valuable experience and realising your strengths, there are so many things you can do to get one step closer to securing your dream graduate job.

At Signature Living careers, we wanted to give you a helping hand with these 5 handy tips.

Happy job hunting!

Choose a career path and focus everything on it

It’s a well-known fact that employers don’t like vague applications. Pick something that best suites your interests, experience, skills and passion. If you can demonstrate these things when applying for a job within that sector, you’ll always do better than if you try and cover all bases.

Attend relevant networking events and careers fairs

Having a good set of networks is really beneficial when searching for a graduate job. Make an effort to join professional groups and familiarise yourself with professionals who you respect for their work and behaviour. Whether that’s at a networking event or a careers fair, it’s the perfect way to get your foot in the door.

Signature Works is all about bringing people together in an environment that engenders collaboration, networking and skill-sharing. They regularly hold informative and innovative networking events that are sure to help you meet new people, learn new skills and boost your employability.

Gain experience in your field, paid or voluntary

Remember, your first job probably won’t be your job for life, everything is a stepping stone. Therefore, if you can build your experience and offer more to your first employer, it will put you in a much better position when it comes to progressing in the world of work.

Whether it’s paid or voluntary work, showing enthusiasm for the sector you want to work in is vital to securing your first job. It will allow you to stand out from the crowd and remember it is not necessarily about the role you have done, but the transferable skills you have developed.

Don’t feel limited by your degree

You don’t have to be an English teacher just because you studied English! Lots of employers are looking for graduates from all disciplines and are mostly interested in the skills and abilities that graduates can bring to their organisation.

Don’t fall into the age-old trap of thinking you have to do a job that is directly related to your degree subject. Your degree has developed more than just your subject knowledge, so there may be opportunities out there which you are ideally suited to, you just haven’t realised it yet.

Harness the power of social media

In this day and age, social platforms such as LinkedIn and Twitter can be used to find jobs and they are a great platform for showing more of your personality and interests to potential employers.

Research suggests 40% of employers use social media to screen candidates, so it’s important to keep your online profile clean. It can either be a friend or foe, so make sure you use it to your advantage. Employers have been known to check up on a candidate before inviting them for interview, so it’s important to ensure you keep all publicly accessible information employer-friendly.

Our Signature Sailors Have Set Sail for Tall Ships 2018

This week, our Signature sailors set sail on a Tall Ships adventure. We chose 5 lucky Signature Living employees to take party in this unforgettable experience.

We’re sponsoring our team to join 9 other trainees and 6 skilled crew members to travel on the ‘Maybe’ tall ship.

Tall Ships 2018

Sailing from Dublin to Scotland, the team are set to spend 7 days on board. And we can’t wait to hear all about it.

A fantastic self-development opportunity, this voyage will test commitment and build upon leadership and teamwork skills.

TS Maybe

TS Maybe boasts a fascinating maritime history. Built in 1929 and owned by Jan Jacob Van Rietschoten, TS Maybe spent years sailing the world, and famously won the Whitbread Round the World Race twice.

Notably, TS Maybe took part in the first ever Tall Ships Race back in 1956. Today, she is one of few boats still competing in the Tall Ships Races! So, we couldn’t have been more pleased with our Signature Sailors jumping aboard.

Source: Maybe-Sailing

While on board, our team and the rest of the crew ensure that Maybe sails smoothly 24 hours a day. Working together with a three watch system, keeping watch is split into Red, White and Blue.

The system means that everyone has to work together. The ship can’t sail safely without everyone pulling their weight.

Each crew member has the chance to keep watch, steer the ship, learn traditional sailing techniques, log book entries, plot the course, set the sails and of course, catch some beautiful sights and have plenty of fun along the way.

The Structure of the Ship

The TS Maybe ship is a gaff ketch. According to maybe-sailing.com, this means that the sails of the ship are four cornered, fore-and-aft rigged and controlled at its peak by a spar (pole) called the gaff.

The key characteristic for distinguishing if a boat is a Ketch is that the mainmast (the forward of the two masts) is bigger than the after mast. TS Maybe has a total of 7 sails. The length of the ship overall comes to 28m in length while the height of Maybe’s main mast is 25m.

Maybe-Sailing describes the ship as ‘a strong sea worthy vessel build with extra strength by using steel frames, a hardwood hull and teak decking.”

When it comes to the inside of the ship, TS Maybe is split into three key areas. You’ll find a 6-berth cabin and shower room located in the forepeak of the ship.

In the midships area, crew will discover the galley, saloon, 4 more cabins and another shower room.

Last but not least is the ‘dog house’ section of the ship. This sleeps 2 crew members and is also home to the navigations and radio equipment, as well as the engine room.

The Best Ways to Boost your Employability

In today’s competitive landscape of businesses and careers, there’s a tough fight for every vacancy. So, you need to know the best ways to boost your employability and get hired!

Everyone is looking for the best and most unique ways to ensure they stand out from the crowd and these handy tips are the perfect starting point to bagging your dream job.

Format Your CV Properly

cv

It might seem obvious, but having your CV formatted correctly is one of the most important and straight forward ways to boost your employability.

On average, employers only spend 5 – 7 seconds looking at your CV and that’s only if it passes through the resume scanning software that most companies and recruiters use these days.

So, if your portfolio doesn’t match certain specifications, there’s a chance it won’t even be seen by a human. That’s why you need to make sure the file you submit is properly filled, formatted and named. Get restructuring, reformatting and ready to see a lot more responses to your applications.

Get Some Relevant Work Experience

Signature Careers recruitment day

Work experience of any kind can boost your employability, but obviously it’s best to target experience which relates to the field you’d like to get into.

It makes you stand out from the rest, shows commitment to that profession and demonstrates that you know something of the area/role in which you are seeking work.

Whether it’s voluntary or paid work, work experience will develop your skills and knowledge, whilst either giving back to the community or improving your income.

Increase Your Productivity

employability

If there’s one single thing that can help you to boost your career prospects the most, it’s increasing your productivity and eliminating procrastination.

Procrastination won’t just negatively affect your job performance, but if you’re looking for a career or job change, it will stop you being as focused and on the ball as you need to.

Boost your employability by taking on some freelance work, achieving more in your current job or completing a course.

Improve Your Online Presence

apprentices

Since many employers these days use social media platforms to find the right candidates, you should make every effort to get noticed on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest and Google+.

LinkedIn is the perfect place to reach out to potential employers, get noticed and really enhance your CV with endorsements, blogs and by sharing your views on relevant issues.

If you can show your personality and uniqueness in a positive way online, this will definitely stand out to potential employers.

Attend a Signature Works Networking Event

It is obvious that in today’s digital world, information is being shared through websites that cater to social causes and needs.

Having a good set of networks is critical to enhance your professional development.  Make an effort to join professional groups to familiarise yourself with professionals who you respect for their work and behaviour.

Signature Works is all about bringing people together in an environment that engenders collaboration, networking and skill-sharing. They regularly hold informative and innovative networking events that are sure to help you meet new people, learn new skills and boost your employability.

Working For Signature Living

hotel jobs

Signature Living has transformed the quality of accommodation in Liverpool. What started off as a single apartment in Liverpool city centre has turned into a multi-award winning business which operates over 350 luxury rooms, from unique party suites to a plethora of large-scale heritage developments.

Created by husband and wife duo, Lawrence and Katie Kenwright, Signature Living has always taken a personal approach, ensuring the guest’s needs are placed above and beyond anything else.

After being tired of dull hotel rooms and shocked by expensive hidden charges, the Kenwright’s set out to create an aparthotel which provided guests with a luxurious home from home in fabulous city centre locations.

With a strong vision and a passion for providing excellent customer service, Signature Living was created.

Alongside our stunning hotels, we’re also known for Morgan’s Spa, exquisite restaurants Carpathia, The Bastion and Alma de Cuba, Signature Weddings and a collection of brand new hotels which are currently under construction.

We believe that the key to achieving the very best service is through our employees’ behaviour. Our team members make all the difference every day, through what they do and say in each and every interaction with our guests. To make that happen, they are empowered to ‘bend’ the rules and procedures if they feel a particular situation demands it.

We are not a hospitality company with great customer service. We are a great service company who happens to be in the hospitality business.

How to Change Your Career Path with Success

If you’re stuck in a rut and looking to change career, then worry not! Though it can be a stressful time, we have just the guide for you.

It’s never late to update your skills, hone the skills you already have and find a job that makes Monday mornings bearable!

So join us as we take a look at how to change your career path with success…

List Your Skills & Interests

Take some time to list your key skills, especially those that can be adapted to other roles. For example, if your role requires communicating well with others, this widely transferable skill should be one for the top of your list.

Meanwhile, your interests should also be priority. If you’re looking to change career, the chances are you’re in search of a more fulfilling, enjoyable or rewarding role.

So, what have you loved about past jobs or voluntary experiences? It’s also worth considering your personal hobbies and taking a look at the industry around them. Just imagine if a hobby you love became a job you love.

Consider Your Current Industry

It may also be beneficial to take a broader look at the industry you’re currently in. If there are aspects of your job that you enjoy, there might be roles in a similar field that could prove more suitable.

For example, if you work in Marketing, you could consider the different roles that fall within the industry, from SEO and copywriting to design and PR.

Brainstorm Your Options

If you’re not sure where to start, a good old-fashioned brainstorming session could do the trick. It’s always useful to get your best ideas down on paper and delve a bit deeper.

This may help to narrow it down and with a clear layout, you can show it to friends and family when looking for their insight and advice.

Take Time to Do Research

Once you’ve got some great ideas to run with, it’s time to do some research!

This could mean finding honest advice from those that have loved and hated the job you’re considering. It could require browsing Google for facts and figures, or even purchasing some key books on the topic.

You may also want to think about who you know and how they could help. Has a friend of a friend worked in a similar role? Consider approaching them for their thoughts and advice so you can ask any questions you may have.

Go and See For Yourself

Arguably the best thing you can do is to go and see for yourself. If you’re not sure if it’s the right path for you, set some time aside to walk in the footsteps of those who have taken the path before you.

You could look into shadowing someone of a similar job title, taking on some voluntary work at the weekend or if it’s a hands-on sort of job, simply giving it a go.

Network, Network, Network

If you can’t shadow someone, why not begin to network? Whether that’s attending a Signature Works event for inspiration and tips or joining our co-working office space.

Placing yourself in the right environment can be hugely beneficial when you’re looking to make a change and could do with a push from like-minded people.

Enhance Your Skills

If you don’t have the right skill set for the job you’re after, it’s not too late to enhance your skills and give your CV a new lease of life.

Whether you search for a night class, gain voluntary experience or even think about heading back to University, all your hard work is sure to pay off the in the end.

Believe That You Can Do It

If you don’t believe that you can do it, who will? Self belief and motivation can go a long way, especially in the world of business!

So find a positive mantra, note each success along the way and you’ll soon be on your way to the career change of your dreams.

To enquire further about our latest networking events or co-working space, you can get in touch on 0151 588 0017.

interview mistakes

Land Your Dream Job: 5 Common Interview Mistakes to Avoid

So, you’ve found your dream job and you’ve got yourself an interview. That’s the first bit all boxed off. But if the interview itself seems a little daunting, we’ve got you covered.

At Signature Careers, we want to help you land the perfect role, so if you’re feeling a little rusty when it comes to acing your interview, look no further for steps to success…

1) Forgetting to Do Research

Research is key when it comes to a successful interview. When you’re busy rehearsing talking about yourself, it’s easy to forget that it works two ways. You need to know your stuff when it comes to them. This simple factor could set you apart from other candidates with similar experience.

So, take some time to research the history of the company and keep an eye out for any brand values or mantras. How can you align with them? Knowing what the company stands for and what their foundations are can help you to tailor how you present yourself. This all gives you a fantastic opportunity to relate your personal qualities and professional experience to their values.

2) Feeling too Underdressed

These days, it’s not too tricky to figure out what to wear for interviews. But make sure you take a moment or two to double check. It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. But what you’re wearing can help you with your confidence, so make sure it’s comfortable.

Taking a scroll through the company’s social media pages may help you to gage what sort of clothes current employees wear and what the culture is like. If it seems formal, keep it smart. But if it seems a little more relaxed, you may want to add some personal touches to your outfit to express who you are.

3) Not Asking Any Questions

Though the purpose of an interview is largely for the company to see if you’re a good fit, it’s also a chance for you to see if the job really sounds right for you. And if you don’t have any questions to ask, you won’t find out everything you might have wanted to know before you started the job.

Not forgetting, if you don’t ask questions, you may risk seeming unenthusiastic.  If another candidate has prepared some thoughtful questions and shows more interest in the role, it could be that they’re more memorable afterwards.

4) Forgetting About Body Language

Body language says a lot. Though its a subconscious communication, it can be just as important as talking. In fact, your body language could be a deal breaker from the moment you arrive.

It’s important to remain conscious of how you’re presenting yourself, without giving it so much thought that it seems forced. The key is to relax, act naturally and think about the qualities you admire most when you’re speaking to others.

Using with your hands while you talk can be persuasive and engaging; it may also make you feel more in control and reaffirm that you know what you’re talking about.

In the meantime, eye contact is also a winning factor. If you can maintain a strong level of eye contact throughout, your interviewer will see that your answers are genuine and that you have confidence in yourself. Again, this should all feel natural. It’s not a staring contest!

5) Over-preparing Your Answers

Just as your body language should feel natural, so should your answers to questions. It’s great to feel prepared but it’s better to think of your interview as more similar to a Powerpoint presentation than a speech. For example, while presenting you may have clear bullet points to support you, but you don’t need to solely rely on them to carry on going.

It may sound a little too robotic if you’re relaying answers from memory. Plus, if you’re asked something that you haven’t prepared an answer to, it’s likely that you may feel thrown off and find yourself unable to think on the spot.

So, we hope you’ve found our guide to Interview Mistakes to Avoid useful and wish you the best of luck. We think you’ve got this!

His restaurant within the Coal Exchange was in line with his philosophy of enjoying the finer things in life, artistically decorated and with an air of fine dining.

How to Become the Perfect Bartender

There are a whole host of skills you need to become the perfect bartender, from being an expert mixologist to getting your customer service spot on, it’s a job that is far from easy.

So, to give you a helping hand, we’ve put together a handy guide to the most important skills and attributes you need to become the perfect bartender.

This is one of those jobs in which your success depends on your personality just as much as your skill behind the bar.

the perfect bartender

Know Your Drinks

Mixology skills are an essential quality of a great bartender. Bartenders should know off-hand how to make the most common drinks, but not be afraid to consult reference books as needed to make drinks that they are not familiar with. If you’re working in a bar that specialises in a certain drink, do your homework.

Good Customer Service Skills

The perfect bartender must possess outstanding customer service skills, the very nature of the job is to serve customers and make sure they have the best experience. You should have a personality that connects with customers and keeps them coming back to the bar.

Keep a Clean Bar

Nothing screams unprofessional or sloppiness like an untidy, dirty bar area. If you constantly clean your area, you’ll maintain a clean work space and improve customer experience. Turn bottles to face forward, wipe the bar-top and straighten the stools.

Have a Good Attitude

To be successful, you need to maintain a good attitude no matter how bad your day is going and treat every customer the same. Simple things like a smile, greeting the customer when they sit down and thanking them when they leave can make the biggest impressions.

Suggest Drinks

If you get a customer who isn’t sure what to drink, suggest something they may like. This is a great way of showing your experience and love for your work, increasing the chance of you getting a tip.

Maybe start by asking what their favourite spirit or type of tipple is and go from there.

Have an Excellent Memory

When you’re a bartender, you won’t be able to write down orders, you’ve got to remember everything! Having a good memory is a key skill to becoming the perfect bartender.

Good Money Handling Skills

Bartenders also act as cashiers and must be good handling money. They should be able to quickly make calculations and figure out change, so the serving process is fast and efficient.

Always be Professional

It is important for you to project a professional attitude and appearance. Customers will trust you and come back again if they had a great experience.

Keeping the conversations friendly, wearing clean clothes appropriate for the establishment, and maintaining a professional attitude will create an environment that patrons and management alike will appreciate.

Organisation and composure

A great bartender works quickly and efficiently. When serving multiple customers, speed is an important quality to have.

How To Get Noticed on LinkedIn

Recruiters are constantly scanning LinkedIn to find top candidates.

Having a below average profile, which is essentially your online resume, could mean you’re missing out on job opportunities.

If you maximise your LinkedIn profile you may not be looking for your next job, it could come and find you.

To help you get noticed on LinkedIn, we’ve put together a few helpful tips on how to stand out from the crowd.

cover letter mistakes

Fill Out the Summary Section

The summary section on LinkedIn is a great place to showcase your achievements and professional goals. In fact, recruiters consider it the most important section of your profile, according to LinkedIn.

Use it to talk about your experience, motivations, interests and skills.

Use a Good, Professional Photo

Profiles that include a clear photo are much more likely to be viewed than those without one.

According to LinkedIn, a profile with a photo is nine times more likely to receive connection requests and messages.

Add Your Location

Lots of recruiters screen by location, they want people who are close to the jobs. By adding your city or country, you will boost your chances of being seen.

Create a Strong Headline

You have 120 characters under your name on your profile to sell yourself. If you can, don’t just mention your job title but show how you solve a problem.

Always Include Your Educational Background

By adding your school, college or university, hiring managers and former classmates are more likely to find you in searches.

Profiles with completed education fields receive 17 times more messages from recruiters.

List the Industry You Work In

To come up in relevant searches, you need to list the type of industry you work in, or the one you’d like to start working in.

It also helps LinkedIn connect you with the right job listings, events and trending articles.

LinkedIn

List Your Current Position

Having an outdated profile can put recruiters off. They might think you haven’t updated your page, you aren’t active on the site and wouldn’t return their messages.

Updating your page is quick and easy to do, and it’s a great way to show your professional trajectory. Be sure to include your current title, company and start date.

Don’t Forget to List Your Skills

Employers are looking for people with skills, so listing as many as you can is a big help. According to LinkedIn, you should include five or more skills to showcase your different talents.

Endorse Some of Your Connections

If you endorse some of your connections, more often than not you will return the favour.

If your top skills start rising in endorsements your visibility will also start to improve.

Join a Networking Group

Joining relevant industry groups on LinkedIn is a great way to showcase your expertise. Recruiters will often search groups looking for strong candidates – show them you are one by proving thoughtful answers and comments.

Spelling and Grammar Check

Always check your writing for spelling and grammar errors, if a recruiter spots a mistake, they are more likely to move on to someone else.

Cover Letter Mistakes You Should Avoid

It’s the first thing your employer will see and the perfect opportunity to showcase your talent, and yet cover letter mistakes are very common.

An effective cover letter can prove that you write well, think clearly and possess the qualities you need to succeed in the job.

To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together some of the most common cover letter mistakes that you should always try to avoid when applying for a new job.

Starting with Your Name

‘My name is John Smith and I want this job because…’ – this is a big no in the job world.

You should write your cover letter as if it was a real letter, the sign off will tell them your name, plus it should be on the top of your resume anyway.

What you Should do:  Always start with a relevant qualification that sells your talents to your potential employer.

So, maybe you’re a recent graduate with a passion for computer programming, tell them. Or, perhaps you’re a marketing professional with over 5 years’ experience in the industry, introduce yourself that way and tell them how it relates to the job you’re applying for.

Lack of Attention to Detail

This is probably one of the most important cover letter mistakes you should avoid.

Submitting a letter with grammar and/or spelling errors is a sure way to get screened out straight away. It shows you don’t have attention to detail and have probably rushed the application process.

You should always check facts such as the employers name, the exact job title and if you refer to the company, make sure you spell it correctly.

What You Should Do: Always use the spelling and grammar checking tools on your computer to identify some of the mistakes, but never just rely on that. Check back through and read it out loud to yourself, to make sure it flows well.

Lastly, always get someone else to proof it for you before submitting your application, a fresh pair of eyes will always pick up on mistakes you’ve missed.

Rehashing Your Resume

Your cover letter should never contain exactly the same information as your resume. It’s the first thing your potential employer will see, therefore you need to really sell your best attributes in a short and concise way.

What you Should do: Focus on two or three examples of your previous work or experience. By giving a bigger picture about how you achieved the skills you have, it will help your employer to understand more about you and how you would fit in their team.

Too Short or too Long

There are sometimes exceptions to the rule, but in general, cover letters shouldn’t go over a page and should usually fill that page. Employers won’t have time to read pages and pages, so you need to make it easy for them to pick out the main attributes and skills you possess.

What You Should Do: Always keep a cover letter concise and wrap it up after around 3 paragraphs. Remember, you don’t need to tell them everything you’ve ever done, just the best snippets to convince them to invite you to an interview.

Highlighting Inexperience

It’s easy to feel vulnerable when applying for a job, especially if you feel that your skills don’t exactly match the specifications. However, starting off a cover letter by underselling yourself or drawing attention to the skills or knowledge you are lacking is never the way to go.

What You Should Do: Be confident and always emphasise the skills you do have, rather than highlighting things you don’t know. You need to impress your employer, not show them your weaknesses.

Sending a Generic Letter

One of the most common cover letter mistakes is to send a generic copy to a range of different job titles. Employers can tell a mile of if you’ve just written one letter and sent it to everyone.

What you Should Do: A good cover letter will be tailored to the specific job you are applying for. Carefully read the job specification and try to refer to most of the points and how your skills will help you to excel in that particular job.

Over Sharing or Over Explaining

There is some information that you don’t need to include in your cover letter. You never need to explain why you want to leave your current job, or why you were let go from a previous employer. There is also no need to include personal details, such as relationship or illness, the recruiter doesn’t need to know this information.

What you Should Do: Your potential employer is looking for details about what you can offer them and how you will fit into their company, so always explain this rather than looking back to the past. Always steer clear of negativity towards a previous employer or job.

Going off Brand

Think of your cover letter as your sales pitch to your future employer. It’s the introduction to your resume, so make sure your cover letter matches up with it in terms of font, design and colour palette. Probably more important for creative jobs, but doing this still shows potential bosses that you’re consistent and have a creative side.

What you Should Do: Make sure your cover letter and resume match up, in terms of design and presentation. It should have the same header as your resume, the same font and size, plus always check the contact information is consistent.

Not Providing Concrete Examples

Expressing empty opinions about your strengths will generally not convince employers about your suitability for the job. You need to back up your skills with clear examples from previous jobs or training.

What you Should Do: Back up your statements by referencing a job or role where you successfully employed that strength. For example, instead of simply stating ‘I possess strong writing skills and an outstanding work ethic.’  Use an example – ‘Strong writing skills enabled me to revise a proposal and secure £10,000 in additional funding from the Jones Foundation.’

Don’t Skip It

Last but not least, if your employer asks for a cover letter, or even if they don’t, never skip it. The only reason you shouldn’t provide a cover letter is if they explicably ask you not to provide one.

A cover letter doesn’t have to be complicated, but you must include one.

Manchester hotel

Signature Living Submits Plans for Our First Manchester Hotel

Signature Living is expanding quickly, with hotels already in development in some of the most exciting towns in the UK, and now we’re turning our attention to one of the North’s most influential cities to create our first Manchester hotel.

The Plans for Our Manchester Hotel

In partnership with fellow Liverpool-based property developer Iliad Group, we have just submitted the planning application to turn the former Commercial Hotel in Castlefield into a 39 room development.

The buildings, 123-125 Liverpool Road, are both grade II listed buildings and we plan to continue our ethos of transforming protected buildings into luxury hotels and developments that people of the city can enjoy.

Manchester Hotel

Tim Groom Architects

Our Manchester hotel will be no different. Although the proposed plans request to demolish some features, these features are not part of the original building. The protected building will be carefully and sensitively restored to make the Manchester hotel a beacon for tourism in the area.

Developing in Manchester

Creating a Manchester hotel has always been a dream of Signature Living’s, as an important city in the north and a hub of tourist activity, it was only logical that we’d eventually bring our unique flair to the city.

Castlefield, in the south-west of the city centre, is the industrial heart of Manchester that has been transformed into a trendy and attractive area.

Being close to Deansgate and within easy reach of all the shopping and nightlife on offer, it makes the perfect location for our very first Manchester Hotel.

Residential Accommodation in Manchester

Earlier this year, we also submitted plans for our first residential development outside of Liverpool, at Victoria Mill in the thriving Miles Platting area.

Featuring one and two-bed apartments with the signature touch throughout, with residents benefitting from a 24-hour concierge service and with great transport links to the city centre.

Experts in Restoring Listed Buildings

Manchester Hotel

This isn’t the first time we’ve taken on the task of restoring a listed building to its former glory. 30 James Street in Liverpool, the former home of White Star Line’s headquarters, was a shadow of its former self and now stand proud once again as one of the most beautiful buildings on Liverpool’s waterfront.

We also took on the mammoth task of transforming The Coal Exchange in Cardiff, the building was in a desperate state after being left to rot. It is now the premier destination for a luxury stay in the city after Signature Living lovingly restored it into The Exchange Hotel.

Manchester Hotel Job Opportunities

7 Interview Tips for Landing Your Dream Job

If you have an interview for your dream job, it’s only natural that you want to do your very best.

You may have spotted the perfect role for you on Signature Careers and now find yourself unsure where to begin.

But worry not, that’s where we come in to land a helping hand.

So from preparation to leaving a lasting impression, our 7 interview tips have got you covered.

Winning Interview Tips

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

Preparation is key when it comes to breezing through that daunting interview.

So, make sure you put pen to paper, brain storm the key questions that you’re likely to be asked and make a brief note of your key responses.

Writing long, specific answers down risks causing panic when you slip up and can’t remember the full answer.

So instead, make a list of the key points you want to emphasise for each question and you’ll find that your answers flow much more organically.

After all, they don’t say “practise makes perfect” for nothing!

Showcase Your Research

While your potential employer will be looking to find out more about you, it’s essential that you know as much as possible about them.

Set some time aside to take a look at the history of the company. What are their brand values? What do they pride themselves on?

If you can showcase your knowledge about the company and explain why their values appeal to you, they’re far more likely to feel that you’re the right fit for the job.

You may also want to keep a couple of basic questions in mind to ask your interviewer. This way, you won’t find yourself lost for words if they ask you if you have anything to ask.

Spend Time on Your Appearance

No, we don’t mean you have to spend hours getting ready or wear a full face of make-up!

But it is a good idea to look and feel your best. Try and decide how formal or informal you should look.

And if you can’t decide, go for somewhere on the smarter side.

As Oscar Wilde once said, “you can never be overdressed or overeducated.”

Leave Plenty of Time to Spare

It may sound a little obvious, but timekeeping is key for making sure your interview day runs smoothly.

Though you may have planned your bus or train route, you need to leave time for the unexpected to happen.

If there’s any delays or changes of plan, you’ll want to have left yourself plenty of time.

Give extra nerves a miss with great time keeping and you’ll breeze through your journey.

Think About Your Body Language

Body language plays an important role in interviews. After all, your interviewer only has a short amount of time to make a judgement.

Preparation will help you to relax and loosen up more naturally. However, nerves can get in the way.

So, make sure that you maintain eye contact, sit up straight and are ready to shake hands with your potential employer when you arrive and when you leave.

These small details are much bigger than you think. Avoid folding your arms and try and relax your body while you’re talking.

Your body language goes hand-in-hand with your experience and your answers. All of these qualities combined will leave a lasting impression!

Take On Your Feedback Positively

Whether you’re the successful candidate or not, all feedback is good feedback.

If you don’t get offered the job, it’s a good idea to politely ask for some feedback to help you prepare for your next interview.

It’s also an idea to send thanks to your interviewer for meeting with you and the opportunity, as you may want to apply again in future.

You never know when landing your dream job may be just around the corner, but all experience will help to ease you through the process.

exchange hotel recruitment

Hospitality Recruitment Day at The Exchange Hotel

The Exchange Hotel is on the lookout for some of the best people in hospitality and catering to join us at our in-house restaurant.

The luxury heritage hotel in Cardiff has triumphed as one of the best places to visit in Cardiff.

Since our opening earlier this year, the former Coal Exchange has gone from strength to strength and November sees the launch of our restaurant’s new home.

While Culley’s has been dishing up some of the best food in Cardiff for the past few months, the final piece of the puzzle is in place and the official restaurant will soon be opening.

On the Hunt for Signature Stars

hospitality recruitment

The big move for Culley’s means we’re now recruiting for even more staff to join the incredible hospitality team at The Exchange Hotel.

We pride ourselves on putting our visitors above everything else, and all of our service roles are filled with driven and talented people who help us to deliver the outstanding service that’s expected from The Exchange Hotel.

We need a full team to be able to continue giving customers the best experience of their life while staying with us in Cardiff. Waiting on staff, mixologists, front of house and conference & banqueting staff are all an integral part of making sure we maintain our high standard of customer satisfaction.

Hospitality Recruitment Assessment Centre

Following the success of our previous hospitality recruitment days, this week, we hosted Cardiff’s first ever assessment centre at The Exchange Hotel

More than 40 hopefuls attended the two-hour long session to get to know the hotel and to see if a place on the hospitality team at the Exchange Hotel would be a good fit for them.

The day was a chance for us to get to know the hopeful candidates and for them to get to know us as a brand, a company and a hotel.

It’s also really important that everyone who comes on board understands the importance of the Signature DNA and what it means to work at one of our iconic heritage sites.

Like with previous assessment centres, the attendees were tasked with creating a mood board that represented Cardiff as a tourist destination and how The Exchange Hotel fits into the city. The teams had to create their board using newspaper and magazine cutouts to make something beautiful about their city.

Then came Pictionary, a favourite for everyone. The fun but challenging game helped establish everyone’s communication skills and helped to demonstrate the importance of clear communication.

The Future of Recruitment at The Exchange Hotel

hospitality recruitment

While it may be easy to assume that The Exchange Hotel is well-established and an imperative part of Cardiff’s culture, thanks to the premium service and beautiful restoration, the hotel has been open less than 12 months and is only the beacon of quality it is today thanks to the incredible staff that work hard to make it so.

We’re always on the lookout for the best of the best and the management staff in Cardiff are set to host even more recruitment days over the coming months as the hotel expands.

Keep an eye on The Exchange Hotel Facebook and the Signature Careers hospitality vacancies page to keep up to date with any exciting opportunities across all of our hotels.

recruitment day

Signature Careers’ Recruitment Day for Cunard Hospitality Staff

The Cunard Building has stood proudly on Liverpool’s waterfront for 100 years as one of the iconic three graces.

Now, Signature Living has acquired the building to bring a breath of fresh air into the beautiful space.

The Cunard Building is Liverpool’s most glamorous events space and Signature Living are set to enhance and improve an already amazing location.

To help us recruit the perfect Signature stars to join the family, we hosted one of our famous recruitment days to get to know all the potential new hospitality staff that will work front of house in the bar and restaurant.

Assessment Activities

recruitment

The session proved so popular that the hopeful applicants had to be split into two sessions to accommodate for the unprecedented interest in working on the front line in the Liverpool landmark. Led by Signature Living’s recruitment officers, Michael and Rachel, the candidates were tasked with three activities throughout the two-hour sessions.

These activities are the perfect way to bring the best out of everyone and to see how they interact with a team and how they use their heads to solve common problems.

The first task saw the group split into teams for Pictionary-style charades, sculpting playdoh to illustrate Signature’s core values. There was one catch to the fun activity – no clues. While there was plenty of laughter during the game, it helped to demonstrate an important point: communication is key. It was hard to guess the sculptures (very hard in some cases!) and without communication, it was nearly impossible.

recruitment

Next was a tower-building challenge. The premise was simple: build a tower out of paper that is strong enough to hold something of substantial weight. Of course, we weren’t making things easy and for this task, the teams were only able to use one hand per person, resulting in the need for effective communication and teamwork. It was a test of patience too, a skill that is required in a fast-paced industry like hospitality.

Finally, was the ever popular Connection Web. This was an immersive team building exercise that required everyone to find something in common with someone else in the group. Once a connection was found with the first person, a ball of string was tossed to the person who had the connection. This created a physical web of similarities between the large group.

The Signature Personality

At Signature Living, we don’t do things by halves, and it’s that mindset that is encapsulated in all of our staff across all roles.

Personality is massively important and our staff are what makes us stand out in the crowd. Everyone’s bubbly personality and extra-mile attitude are what makes our guests have the time of their lives and return for more.

Our core values are cemented in building long-term relationships with our guests and diners while creating value for them. Hospitality staff are some of the key players in achieving impeccable customer satisfaction.

A Liverpool Icon

recruitment

The Cunard Building at Pier Head is a Grade II* listed building, nestled between her two equally famous sisters: The Liver Building and the Port of Liverpool Building.

The lasting impression that the stunning building leaves on all who set eyes on it is unrivalled. The interior is equally as awe-inspiring with luxurious décor and exciting plans in place to make it even better.

What could be more exciting than working in one of Liverpool’s most famous buildings?

Keep an eye on our Facebook and hospitality recruitment page for all the latest job opportunities at the beautiful Cunard Building.

How to Write a Winning Hospitality CV

If you’re in search of advice for how to write a hospitality CV, Signature Careers has got you covered.

In fact, we may even have your next job awaiting with our range of dynamic hospitality jobs in Liverpool.

But first things first, applying for a new role can be daunting. So, if you’re looking to expand your horizons, look no further than our guide to crafting a winning CV.

“The customer is always right” coined Harry Gordon Selfridge. And while the catchy phrase was popularised throughout the early 1990s, customer service is just as vital today.

That being said, fantastic customer service and hospitality skills can be tough to showcase through the written word.

But worry not! follow our steps on how to write a hospitality CV and you’ll be well on your way to success…

Showcase your experience

If you can’t mention those weeks of work experience on your CV, then when can you?

Make the most of your experience and don’t be afraid to showcase it. That voluntary work you did might not be directly related, but there’s usually a way to make it count.

Make a list of what you learnt during each experience, whether it was a full-time job or casual experience.

Did you learn organisational skills? Maybe it helped shape you into the punctual, reliable person you are today. If, so don’t forget to shout about it!

Hone in on key skills

So, you’ve talked about your skills overall. Now it’s time to hone in on the key skills you’ll need for getting that job.

For hospitality, you’ll want to focus on your ability to connect with customers, but simply saying you’re great at customer service isn’t really enough.

Be specific about your interpersonal skills, from listening and persuading customers and to forming friendly connections. These are the hospitality skills that will take you to the next level.

You may also want to think of a time that you’ve dazzled a group of people with strong leadership or talk about your sound knowledge of hygiene and safety.

If you’re a fast learner and can take feedback on board, those are a bonus too.

Show your enthusiasm

Enthusiasm will set you apart from the rest of the candidates, so it’s important to prove that you care.

Take some time to research the company. What are their core values? How do you align with their values?

Explain why you’d be the perfect fit for the team and why you’ve chosen this company over the seas of others. After all, who doesn’t love a good compliment?

Learn as much as you can about their history and successes over the years. This is also great practise for your interview, which could be just around the corner!

What makes you different?

Recruiters or managers are likely to look through a multitude of hospitality applications, so it’s important that your CV makes its mark on their memory.

How would your friends best describe your qualities? Decide what makes you unique and embrace it. The reader will be looking to get a feel for your personality.

Talk a little about what makes you the wonderful person you are. What are your hobbies? What are you interested in?

If you’re sociable and motivated, these qualities go hand-in-hand with hospitality, so it’s well worth giving them a mention.

Presentation is everything

Presentation is everything when it comes to writing a hospitality CV. If your font size is always changing and the layout is a strain on the eyes, it’s unlikely that you’ll get too far!

Set aside some time to take a look at your layout and place yourself in the shoes of the person reading it. How would you want to see a CV structured if you were recruiting? What would you prioritise?

Our advice is to start with your personal contact details and work your way down the page from there. Begin with a personal summary and then move on to listing academic qualifications, career/voluntary experience and a section to state if you have references available.

You can also find plenty of CV layout inspiration online for a better understanding of what recruiters look for. Recruitment websites including reed.com provide downloadable templates to get going.

So, we hope you enjoyed our advice on how to write a hospitality CV. We suspect you’ll be showcasing your skills and charming customers in no time!

Liverpool Hospitality Recruitment

Signature’s Recruitment Team Comes Together for Hospitality Recruitment Drive

Signature Group’s brand new recruitment team got together this week to host another exceptional recruitment day, this time to seek out the best hospitality stars.

Louise Riley, recruitment manager, introduced hopeful candidates to the newly formed team, Rachel Higham and Michael McGurk and together they led a packed out room through a series of challenges and tasks.

Hospitality and great customer service are at the heart of everything we do at Signature. We pride ourselves on putting our visitors above everything else and consider ourselves to be a customer service company before being a hospitality company.

It’s for this reason that our front of house and customer facing roles are filled by only the best and the most outstanding people. From the people who greet hotel guests to the people who serve diners, each and every hospitality staff member has the Signature DNA ingrained in them and they’re proud to wear that DNA on their sleeve.

An Exciting Day of Tasks and Challenges

This week’s assessment centre recruitment day was our busiest one to date, with applicants from all walks of life and all across Merseyside hoping to fill the positions at our new culinary venture.

Joining the new recruitment team were Carpathia’s (30 James Street’s amazing rooftop dining experience) restaurant manager and bar manager, Tom Barrie and Stephen Pickup. Carpathia Champagne Bar & Restaurant is renowned for its impeccable service and dedicated staff, so it made sense that the driving force behind the hospitality beacon would help on the day.

The day began with a series of ice-breakers to help everyone get comfortable and introduce themselves to the group, including letting everyone know what they wanted to be when they grew up. There were some interesting answers, namely someone aspiring to be a monkey and someone pursuing a career as Disney princess.

A firm favourite at the assessment centre is the creation of mood boards by the potential recruits, helping them to explore what they think represents Signature Group. It’s a great way to discover how much the applicants know about the company and whether they are suitable to blend in with the Signature DNA.

Making quick decisions and thinking on your feet is a key part of a hospitality role. In all our dining establishments, there’s a quick-paced atmosphere that keeps you on your toes and deciding the best course of action is a necessity. The lifeboat task is designed to test out these skills by proposing a list of people and asking candidates to choose a small number to save on the last lifeboat leaving a sinking ship.

The most exciting addition to the recruitment day was the connection web. This was an immersive team building exercise that required everyone to find something in common with someone else in the group. Once a connection was found with the first person, a ball of string was tossed to the person who had the connection. This created a physical web of similarities between the large group. When recruitment officer Michael tossed a ball into the web, it fell through to the floor, signifying that while the group were getting to know each other and finding similarities, more needed to be discovered.

New Liverpool Restaurant Coming to the Cunard Building

At Signature Careers, we have more exciting news for the flourishing, vibrant city that we’re lucky enough to call home.

Our presence in Liverpool is perpetually expanding and our passion for cultivating the city’s best loved buildings with a lasting purpose in the city is only continuing to grow.

This week, we revealed more about our plans for one of the stunning Three Graces, the Cunard building.

Set to create a multitude of new jobs in Liverpool, there’s plenty to look forward to.

The beautiful Grade II* listed building is located at the Pier Head, along Liverpool’s picturesque waterfront.

The bustling area attracts tourists and locals throughout the year, offering breathtaking views of the city and the perfect balance of history, culture and entertainment.

The Cunard couldn’t be in a better location for special celebrations and scenic days out. That’s why we’re planning on transforming the 18,000 sq ft ground floor of the Cunard into a spectacular restaurant.

Signature Living founder Lawrence Kenwright told the press he “absolutely” expects the restaurant to be the best in the city, so local foodies can certainly get excited.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, he shared:

The ground floor is Grade II* listed so we have had to do a report with a heritage specailist. We are not knocking anything down, but it is 18,000 sq ft so we need concertina doors to give you the flexibility.

That means you can open up the full 18,000 sq ft for some events, but then have break-out rooms for smaller events, without that it doesn’t work.

The Cunard is undoubtedly one of the best spaces in the city, so it couldn’t be more fitting for a high quality restaurant. Visitors to Liverpool will be able to dine in luxury without compromising on gaining an atmospheric feel of the city.

Discussing ambitions for the new project, Lawrence emphasised:

The London Carriage Works is currently the best restaurant in the city with two AA rosettes. It’s our intention to get three or four rosettes – we absolutely want this to be the best restaurant in Liverpool.

Of course, this is fantastic news for readers of Signature Careers. An array of jobs in Liverpool will stem from our plans for the Cunard. And what better venue to work in?

Make sure you don’t miss out on the progression of this project and new hospitality and management jobs in Liverpool by checking back soon. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with our plans.

Meanwhile, you can get the latest news straight to your timeline over on our Facebook page.

Signature Living Reveal Plans for Croxteth Hall Transformation That Gives Back to the Community

Signature Living have revealed ambitious plans to transform the historic Croxteth Hall into a luxury hotel and wedding venue, with a training centre and donations to the Croxteth community.

The plans are set to include a hospitality training centre in the hall for local people and an estimated £500,000 from the project will be given to the Croxteth community each year.

Liverpool Council have stated they can no longer afford the upkeep and running costs of this once magnificent Grade II* building and are therefore on the lookout for a new operator to take it on.

With a proven track record of transforming derelict and empty listed buildings into high-end luxury venues, Signature Living are excited about the prospect of boosting the Croxteth community.

Croxteth Hall transformation

Croxteth Hall

A Centre of Excellence

As well as the development plans, Lawrence Kenwright’s vision will see local people from the Croxteth area given the chance to train and learn skills within the hospitality sector.

A centre of excellence will be created with a vision of training future Signature Living employees, which will also help boost employment figures. Lawrence said:

“There are a lot of unemployed people in Croxteth, we have just taken on 30 people from there in the last six months and some of them are our best workers.

“This means people from Croxteth could work in our sites in Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and all these great cities – they can move up the chain to be anything they want to be, anywhere they want to be.”

Signature Living pride themselves on looking after their workers and ensuring they get the best opportunities available.

Giving Back to the Community

The Signature Living boss has also promised that if his proposals are successful, 33% of its pre-tax profits would go directly to local people in the form of charitable donation.  This has been estimated to around £500,000 per year.

Lawrence has said:

“The idea would be to set up a charitable board of six people and unlike other grant funding for charities, this will be used for whatever we want to use it for and will be more about people – it will be a quick and easy process.”

The Plans

Signature Living have proposed to transform Croxteth Hall into a luxurious hotel, spa and wedding venue.

Set to take just one year to complete, the plans include a unique Signature Living stamp with ‘glamping’ and ‘Hansel and Gretal treehouse’ rooms.

These ambitious plans are typical of Signature Living and Lawrence’s ambition to create a successful hotel and wedding venue outside of the city centre:

“You’ve got to have an edge – you can’t just open and say we are here – it’s got to be something that is different from everywhere else – but these are not things we can do without the say so of the council.”

Weddings are a huge part of the amazing new plans.

Croxteth is already a functioning wedding venue, however, currently they are few and far between. Lawrence sees the number of weddings per year increasing from 20 to 200.

He also stated that the addition of a luxury hotel will increase the appeal for wedding planners, as guests will have somewhere to stay afterwards.

Croxteth Hall transformation

Croxteth Hall

The Future of Croxteth

Signature Living are passionate about saving an asset like Croxteth Hall, redeveloping it for the better and opening it for the local community.

Currently, Croxteth Hall is open just 25% of the time and they charge £6 to get in, when it’s a hotel it will be open to everyone all the time.

“All the good stuff with the wood panelled walls, paintings and great views – that will all be open to the public – these places can’t be museums anymore as there isn’t the funding for them.”

Liverpool council have made it very clear that they will only hear bids that respect the listed status of the building and have a strong vision of maintaining the heritage of the site. They have also stated the importance of maintaining public access to the grounds.

Lawrence is also very passionate about this:

“It will be interesting to see if the others have the same understanding of listed buildings that we do – when it comes to taking listed buildings from semi-dereliction to hotels, I don’t know anyone that does what we do in the UK.”

The council is currently inviting developers to put their ideas forward and it is hoped a bid could be selected within three months.

The future of Signature Living is looking brighter than ever. Our latest plans for new hotels in Ireland have spurred exciting headlines and ignited plenty of promise for fresh opportunities.

We’ve recently announced that we’re setting out to build three Belfast hotels within 18 months. And that’s only the beginning of our ambitious plans to transform stunning yet neglected buildings in Ireland.

Sharing plans for the future, Signature Living founder and property developer, Lawrence Kenwright told the Irish News:

“It could be seven (hotels in Belfast), it all depends on deals that can be found, the right property for the project that we want. We hope to have all four open in 18 months, certainly three. I can’t see the fourth yet as we haven’t nailed the fourth, but certainly three can be open in 18 months.”

After achieving an unrivalled presence in Liverpool, Signature Living has risen from strength to strength over the years.  Beginning with with our party apartments filling a gap in the market, we now specialise in restoring historic buildings that are deeply loved by communities. We’ve learnt how to give a new lease of life to buildings, restoring them with a long-term purpose in the city.

Only recently, we reopened the doors of Cardiff’s grand former Coal Exchange. The building holds profound sentiment in Cardiff, and now stands proud again, carefully restored as The Exchange Hotel.

Our significant investment of between £80 million and £110 million in Belfast has been welcomed with open arms by councils, and we couldn’t be more excited to begin laying the foundations of our plans and putting them into action.

Though only two of our projects have been shared in detail with the public so far, there’s certainly plenty to get excited about as proposals continue.

Following announcements, the public have expressed great enthusiasm for our new hotels in Ireland, including the £15 million George Best themed hotel at the Scottish Mutual Building along with the £25 million redevelopment of the historic Crumlin Road Courthouse.

It’s safe to say that we have our fair share of experience when it comes to weaving a story around a building, firstly with Liverpool’s 30 James Steet Hotel – Home of the Titanic, secondly with our Bill Shankly-themed Shankly Hotel and of course most recently, Cardiff Bay’s Exchange Hotel.

Expressing what has been learnt from building the Shankly, Lawrence Kenwright emphasised:

“One of the main attributes we learnt from the Shankly was the stories that resonate in every room. So in George Best as you can in Shankly you’ll see a story by a personal friend or an ex-footballer,”

“The idea is you’ve got to reflect the DNA of the building along with the person that’s in there so George is coming into the Scottish Mutual. It will be high-end with a bit of a racy feel. We know the designs, we know what we’re going to do, but we’re still working on it at the moment.”

As for Crumlin Road, at Signature Living we’re currently waiting on planning approval, yet ideas are well underway and we’re very keen to begin working on the site as soon as possible. Similarly to Cardiff’s Coal Exchange, we know we’ll be faced with a lot of rubble that will need removing, scaffholding that will be required to secure the walls and plenty more to do before winter arrives.

However, at Signature Living we’re never afraid of a challenge, and it’s Crumlin Road that Lawrence Kenwright is really looking forward to getting stuck in to.

Until then, Belfast locals can look forward to up to 400 full and part-time jobs across the four new hotels in Ireland, along with plenty of hands-on jobs required for construction.

So at Signature Careers, the next few years are filled with promise and fantastic opportunity. And we couldn’t be more excited to bring you along for the journey.

Signature Group Searches for Contractor Workforce in Belfast

Signature Group’s growth and investment in Northern Ireland’s capital city of Belfast is reaching a milestone this month as the search begins for building contractors.

The expansion to Belfast was a natural move after the unprecedented success of Signature Group in Liverpool and the recent conversion of The Exchange Hotel, Cardiff. With Crumlin Road Courthouse and The Scottish Mutual Building already in development, and several other landmark buildings in discussion, Signature’s dedication to Northern Ireland is being firmly cemented.

As buildings that have suffered from neglect and are currently in a state of disrepair, major work and renovations are needed to bring them up to the standard that Signature Group is known for. To help us with the task, we’re searching for building contractors to assist in transforming these buildings back to their former glory.

Meet Signature Living

Signature Group is committed to working with local people to sensitively and sympathetically restore these iconic buildings, as well as the future developments which are to be announced soon. Effectively executing this renovation requires contractors from across the building sector, including electrical and plumbing contractors, kitchen and bathroom suppliers, construction workers, specialist hotel technology providers and fit-out companies.

To introduce potential contractors to Signature Group, who we are as a company and similar projects, we’re hosting a unique, informal meet and greet at Belfast City Hall. The event is taking place on Thursday 29th June between 2 pm and 5 pm and local contractors are invited to come along and share their portfolios and experience.

Lawrence Kenwright, founder and chairman of Signature Group, has always had an interest in the historical city. He has been keen to leave the Signature mark on Belfast for some time and believes the people and workforce of the city are a big part of what makes it so amazing.

He said: “One of the greatest draws to Northern Ireland for me was the outstanding calibre of its workforce and talent across so many industries.

“I firmly believe that Signature Living can benefit from the best of local talent in developing up to five new hotels here and am committed to working with local construction industry contractors and suppliers wherever possible.”

The Future of Signature Belfast

The purchase of Crumlin Road Courthouse was confirmed in March of this year. Despite extensive damage in the 20 years since its closure, the courthouse has a bright future for the first time in a long time. Signature Group is committed to investing £25 million to ensure the Grade B+ listed building gets the attention it deserves to become the benchmark for the hotel industry in Belfast.

The Scottish Mutual Building, located on Donegall Square South and Bedford Street, is the latest confirmed purchase and has been announced as the site for the much-anticipated George Best themed hotel. Basing the transformation on the highly popular Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, the hotel will be a fitting tribute to the Northern Irish legend.

Both sites, and the sites to be confirmed, will feature Signature Group’s trademark luxury décor and high-quality furnishings and fittings.

Sympathetic Restorations

Signature Group has a talent for taking iconic and historically significant buildings and returning them to their former glory. With the unparalleled success of 30 James Street, the former headquarters of the White Star Line Shipping Company and the home of the Titanic, and The Exchange Hotel (formerly Cardiff Coal Exchange), we know a thing or two about maintaining listed buildings’ DNA and intertwining history and modernity.

Both 30 James Street and The Exchange Hotel were desperately damaged before Signature Group took them on board. They’re now the most luxurious and beautiful buildings in their respective cities and guests have marvelled at their magnificent transformations.

If you’re a contractor looking to get involved in Belfast’s most exciting new hotel developments, come along to the Meet Signature Living event on Thursday 29th June to find out more about the exciting plans and how you can get involved.

All attendees are required to register their interest by midday on Monday 26th June, email info@lanyoncommunications.com or call 028 9018 3242 to be a part of Belfast’s next big thing.

Signature Group Hosts Recruitment Day to Find the Next Stars of The Garden of Eden

Signature Careers has continued to revolutionise the recruitment process with another fun filled and unique assessment day. This time, the search was on for outstanding catering and banqueting staff for the beautiful and ever popular Garden of Eden venue, situated on the rooftop of The Shankly Hotel.

Signature Living is dedicated to finding the best staff for all our iconic business ventures. We know that it is our employees who make Signature Group the benchmark for the hospitality sector and we’re extremely proud of the high quality of staff that choose to join the Signature family.

Having revolutionised the accommodation and hospitality market, we’re now paving the way for a better process to find the employees that can help us deliver the amazing service we’re known for.

Our assessment days help us to see past a one-page CV and a pressure-filled interview to get the very best out of the hopeful applicants.

The Assessment Day

Louise Riley, Recruitment Manager for Signature Group, organised and orchestrated the day, leading the potential recruits through a series of tasks to demonstrate their suitability for life as a representative of the sought-after venue.

Signature Careers recruitment day

Louise was joined by C&B manager Lucy Woodford, Bar Manager Adam Taylor and Eden Supervisor Michelle Hopper to help find the future Signature Stars. The first task saw the candidates create mood boards that they think represented Signature Group, and the team at Table One stole the show with their observations on the importance of food and beverages at Eden. Our iconic and amazing Afternoon Teas are a stand-out fixture at all our developments and the importance of these was demonstrated incredibly well by Table One.

Signature Careers recruitment day

The next part of the lively session was an interactive questionnaire. Each hopeful was given a task to identify key members of Eden’s, and The Shankly Hotel’s, team and find one interesting, unusual or unknown fact about that person.

The hotel’s General Manager was the first piece of the puzzle, and the applicants were delighted to discover Duncan Stewart has a penchant for dressing as The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Frank-N-Furter. Wedding Co-ordinator Ciara Martin was harder to crack and only one team managed to find out she has a love for playing the drums.

A Venue to be Proud of

The Garden of Eden is the ultimate rooftop venue for events, boasting unrestricted views across the city of Liverpool with a stunning and elegant backdrop to weddings, conferences, parties, showers and Afternoon Teas.

With a 360-degree glass exterior, a rooftop garden that has to be seen to be believed and plans in place for a 100ft outdoor slide, Eden is the perfect place for a magical and truly unforgettable time.

For a venue as magnificent as Eden, Signature Group needs the highest calibre of staff to ensure our guests receive only the best service and care throughout their journey with us. From making sure drinks never go unfilled, plates never go empty and requests are fulfilled to helping deliver a truly unforgettable experience, our C&B staff are the pinnacle of excellent service.

The Shankly Hotel becomes first Autism Friendly Hotel in Liverpool

We are extremely proud to announce that The Shankly Hotel on Victoria Street is Liverpool’s first autism-friendly Hotel.

Signature Living has been working in conjunction with Autism Adventures and Autism Together to help Liverpool to become the first autism-friendly city in the UK.

The staff at The Shankly Hotel and The Bastion Bar & Restaurant will attend special training and awareness programs which will enable the hotel to properly adapt to those with autism and their families.

The training will ensure that The Shankly and The Bastion staff recognise the signs that someone may have autism and will equip them with the ability to handle challenging behaviour.

Autism Adventures was founded by Julie Simpson after she wanted her autistic son Joe to be able to go out in Liverpool and do the things other children can do such as going out for a meal, using public transport, staying in hotels and going shopping.

Signature Living joins the likes of Liverpool One, Merseytravel, Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Everton FC as Autism Champions in the city as we join the bid to make Liverpool a better and more accessible city for those with autism and their families.

It is estimated that one in every hundred people or around 700,000 people in the UK have autism but the awareness around the spectrum of autism is particularly low which is why becoming autism-friendly is so important.

The project is backed by Connect to Autism, a Department of Health-funded scheme being rolled out nationally by the Autism Alliance, a network of 18 autism charities. The scheme aims to increase awareness and understanding of autism right across the UK, it is also backed by the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce.

For National Autism Awareness Week and National Autism Awareness Day (2nd April 2016) the hashtag #FlagUpAutism is being used to spread the message about autism awareness in the UK.
We are very proud to be working with these great charities and organisations and to be part of such an important initiative.
