If you want to be successful, one of the best ways to do so is to emulate other like-minded, successful people. While everyone is unique, there are a lot of common patterns, tropes and behaviours that are sure to make you more successful if you were to adopt them.
There are no secrets to success. Whether you’re a business person, parent or student, take a look at what it takes to be successful – no matter how you interpret success.
1. Set Boundaries
The word “no” is as powerful and important as the word “yes.” Successful people quickly realise that they cannot say “yes” to everyone and every venture – they know they sometimes need to take a break or, vice versa, need to work harder. If you want to be a successful person then set boundaries and know when to say “no.”
Of course, if you can say “no” in a creative manner that leaves the door open for future opportunities and doesn’t annoy your friends, then you’re onto a winner.
In essence, if you say “no” just as much as you say “yes,” be sure to watch your success rate rise.
2. Keep Failure in Perspective
Not to sound like a corny Facebook post from an account with a lion as its profile picture but, you learn more from failure than you do from success. Success is built on a series of failures and lessons learned. Successful people learn from failures every day and they certainly don’t let failure hold them back. Take a leaf out of our very own Lawrence Kenwright’s book who bounced back from bankruptcy to build Signature Living.
Provided that you address your failures, keep them in perspective and ultimately learn from them, then you’re on the road to success; so much so that C. S. Lewis once said: “Repeated failures are the posts on the road to achievement. One fails forward toward success.”
Wannabe successful people take note.
Some of the most successful people wake up early and exercise. Former-president Barack Obama exercises for 45 minutes every day. Richard Branson, when asked how he stays productive answered: “work out.” While editor-in-chief Anna Wintour plays tennis at 5:45am every day. These people are successful people.
So, if some of the most powerful and successful people in the world can find the time to exercise, so can you.
4. Take a Leap of Faith
The main reason why people don’t succeed is because they don’t try to; they find comfort in the ordinary and banal and criticise those who don’t. Don’t be one of those people who never take a leap of faith. Start that business, leave that job you hate and work harder than you’ve ever worked before, it may transform your entire life.
Successful people fail – we’ve established that. But what successful people don’t do is entertain people with tales of what could have been. Don’t be that person.
5. Focus on Productivity
Time does not equal success. If you are always busy but never productive, then you are not successful. We live in a ‘pay by the hour’ world, however, if you want to be a successful person, you need to use your time wisely and, more importantly, productively.
When your productiveness outshines the busyness of those around you, then you are truly indispensable and, ultimately, a successful person.
