interview mistakes

Land Your Dream Job: 5 Common Interview Mistakes to Avoid

So, you’ve found your dream job and you’ve got yourself an interview. That’s the first bit all boxed off. But if the interview itself seems a little daunting, we’ve got you covered.

At Signature Careers, we want to help you land the perfect role, so if you’re feeling a little rusty when it comes to acing your interview, look no further for steps to success…

1) Forgetting to Do Research

Research is key when it comes to a successful interview. When you’re busy rehearsing talking about yourself, it’s easy to forget that it works two ways. You need to know your stuff when it comes to them. This simple factor could set you apart from other candidates with similar experience.

So, take some time to research the history of the company and keep an eye out for any brand values or mantras. How can you align with them? Knowing what the company stands for and what their foundations are can help you to tailor how you present yourself. This all gives you a fantastic opportunity to relate your personal qualities and professional experience to their values.

2) Feeling too Underdressed

These days, it’s not too tricky to figure out what to wear for interviews. But make sure you take a moment or two to double check. It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. But what you’re wearing can help you with your confidence, so make sure it’s comfortable.

Taking a scroll through the company’s social media pages may help you to gage what sort of clothes current employees wear and what the culture is like. If it seems formal, keep it smart. But if it seems a little more relaxed, you may want to add some personal touches to your outfit to express who you are.

3) Not Asking Any Questions

Though the purpose of an interview is largely for the company to see if you’re a good fit, it’s also a chance for you to see if the job really sounds right for you. And if you don’t have any questions to ask, you won’t find out everything you might have wanted to know before you started the job.

Not forgetting, if you don’t ask questions, you may risk seeming unenthusiastic.  If another candidate has prepared some thoughtful questions and shows more interest in the role, it could be that they’re more memorable afterwards.

4) Forgetting About Body Language

Body language says a lot. Though its a subconscious communication, it can be just as important as talking. In fact, your body language could be a deal breaker from the moment you arrive.

It’s important to remain conscious of how you’re presenting yourself, without giving it so much thought that it seems forced. The key is to relax, act naturally and think about the qualities you admire most when you’re speaking to others.

Using with your hands while you talk can be persuasive and engaging; it may also make you feel more in control and reaffirm that you know what you’re talking about.

In the meantime, eye contact is also a winning factor. If you can maintain a strong level of eye contact throughout, your interviewer will see that your answers are genuine and that you have confidence in yourself. Again, this should all feel natural. It’s not a staring contest!

5) Over-preparing Your Answers

Just as your body language should feel natural, so should your answers to questions. It’s great to feel prepared but it’s better to think of your interview as more similar to a Powerpoint presentation than a speech. For example, while presenting you may have clear bullet points to support you, but you don’t need to solely rely on them to carry on going.

It may sound a little too robotic if you’re relaying answers from memory. Plus, if you’re asked something that you haven’t prepared an answer to, it’s likely that you may feel thrown off and find yourself unable to think on the spot.

So, we hope you’ve found our guide to Interview Mistakes to Avoid useful and wish you the best of luck. We think you’ve got this!

the perfect bartender

Know Your Drinks

Mixology skills are an essential quality of a great bartender. Bartenders should know off-hand how to make the most common drinks, but not be afraid to consult reference books as needed to make drinks that they are not familiar with. If you’re working in a bar that specialises in a certain drink, do your homework.

Good Customer Service Skills

The perfect bartender must possess outstanding customer service skills, the very nature of the job is to serve customers and make sure they have the best experience. You should have a personality that connects with customers and keeps them coming back to the bar.

Keep a Clean Bar

Nothing screams unprofessional or sloppiness like an untidy, dirty bar area. If you constantly clean your area, you’ll maintain a clean work space and improve customer experience. Turn bottles to face forward, wipe the bar-top and straighten the stools.

Have a Good Attitude

To be successful, you need to maintain a good attitude no matter how bad your day is going and treat every customer the same. Simple things like a smile, greeting the customer when they sit down and thanking them when they leave can make the biggest impressions.

Suggest Drinks

If you get a customer who isn’t sure what to drink, suggest something they may like. This is a great way of showing your experience and love for your work, increasing the chance of you getting a tip.

Maybe start by asking what their favourite spirit or type of tipple is and go from there.

Have an Excellent Memory

When you’re a bartender, you won’t be able to write down orders, you’ve got to remember everything! Having a good memory is a key skill to becoming the perfect bartender.

Good Money Handling Skills

Bartenders also act as cashiers and must be good handling money. They should be able to quickly make calculations and figure out change, so the serving process is fast and efficient.

Always be Professional

It is important for you to project a professional attitude and appearance. Customers will trust you and come back again if they had a great experience.

Keeping the conversations friendly, wearing clean clothes appropriate for the establishment, and maintaining a professional attitude will create an environment that patrons and management alike will appreciate.

How To Get Noticed on LinkedIn

Recruiters are constantly scanning LinkedIn to find top candidates.

Having a below average profile, which is essentially your online resume, could mean you’re missing out on job opportunities.

If you maximise your LinkedIn profile you may not be looking for your next job, it could come and find you.

To help you get noticed on LinkedIn, we’ve put together a few helpful tips on how to stand out from the crowd.

cover letter mistakes

Fill Out the Summary Section

The summary section on LinkedIn is a great place to showcase your achievements and professional goals. In fact, recruiters consider it the most important section of your profile, according to LinkedIn.

Use it to talk about your experience, motivations, interests and skills.

Use a Good, Professional Photo

Profiles that include a clear photo are much more likely to be viewed than those without one.

According to LinkedIn, a profile with a photo is nine times more likely to receive connection requests and messages.

Add Your Location

Lots of recruiters screen by location, they want people who are close to the jobs. By adding your city or country, you will boost your chances of being seen.

Create a Strong Headline

You have 120 characters under your name on your profile to sell yourself. If you can, don’t just mention your job title but show how you solve a problem.

Always Include Your Educational Background

By adding your school, college or university, hiring managers and former classmates are more likely to find you in searches.

Profiles with completed education fields receive 17 times more messages from recruiters.

List the Industry You Work In

To come up in relevant searches, you need to list the type of industry you work in, or the one you’d like to start working in.

It also helps LinkedIn connect you with the right job listings, events and trending articles.

LinkedIn

List Your Current Position

Having an outdated profile can put recruiters off. They might think you haven’t updated your page, you aren’t active on the site and wouldn’t return their messages.

Updating your page is quick and easy to do, and it’s a great way to show your professional trajectory. Be sure to include your current title, company and start date.

Don’t Forget to List Your Skills

Employers are looking for people with skills, so listing as many as you can is a big help. According to LinkedIn, you should include five or more skills to showcase your different talents.

Endorse Some of Your Connections

If you endorse some of your connections, more often than not you will return the favour.

If your top skills start rising in endorsements your visibility will also start to improve.

Join a Networking Group

Joining relevant industry groups on LinkedIn is a great way to showcase your expertise. Recruiters will often search groups looking for strong candidates – show them you are one by proving thoughtful answers and comments.

Spelling and Grammar Check

Always check your writing for spelling and grammar errors, if a recruiter spots a mistake, they are more likely to move on to someone else.

New Liverpool Restaurant Coming to the Cunard Building

At Signature Careers, we have more exciting news for the flourishing, vibrant city that we’re lucky enough to call home.

Our presence in Liverpool is perpetually expanding and our passion for cultivating the city’s best loved buildings with a lasting purpose in the city is only continuing to grow.

This week, we revealed more about our plans for one of the stunning Three Graces, the Cunard building.

Set to create a multitude of new jobs in Liverpool, there’s plenty to look forward to.

The beautiful Grade II* listed building is located at the Pier Head, along Liverpool’s picturesque waterfront.

The bustling area attracts tourists and locals throughout the year, offering breathtaking views of the city and the perfect balance of history, culture and entertainment.

The Cunard couldn’t be in a better location for special celebrations and scenic days out. That’s why we’re planning on transforming the 18,000 sq ft ground floor of the Cunard into a spectacular restaurant.

Signature Living founder Lawrence Kenwright told the press he “absolutely” expects the restaurant to be the best in the city, so local foodies can certainly get excited.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO, he shared:

The ground floor is Grade II* listed so we have had to do a report with a heritage specailist. We are not knocking anything down, but it is 18,000 sq ft so we need concertina doors to give you the flexibility.

That means you can open up the full 18,000 sq ft for some events, but then have break-out rooms for smaller events, without that it doesn’t work.

The Cunard is undoubtedly one of the best spaces in the city, so it couldn’t be more fitting for a high quality restaurant. Visitors to Liverpool will be able to dine in luxury without compromising on gaining an atmospheric feel of the city.

Discussing ambitions for the new project, Lawrence emphasised:

The London Carriage Works is currently the best restaurant in the city with two AA rosettes. It’s our intention to get three or four rosettes – we absolutely want this to be the best restaurant in Liverpool.

Of course, this is fantastic news for readers of Signature Careers. An array of jobs in Liverpool will stem from our plans for the Cunard. And what better venue to work in?

Make sure you don’t miss out on the progression of this project and new hospitality and management jobs in Liverpool by checking back soon. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date with our plans.

Meanwhile, you can get the latest news straight to your timeline over on our Facebook page.

Signature Living Reveal Plans for Croxteth Hall Transformation That Gives Back to the Community

Signature Living have revealed ambitious plans to transform the historic Croxteth Hall into a luxury hotel and wedding venue, with a training centre and donations to the Croxteth community.

The plans are set to include a hospitality training centre in the hall for local people and an estimated £500,000 from the project will be given to the Croxteth community each year.

Liverpool Council have stated they can no longer afford the upkeep and running costs of this once magnificent Grade II* building and are therefore on the lookout for a new operator to take it on.

With a proven track record of transforming derelict and empty listed buildings into high-end luxury venues, Signature Living are excited about the prospect of boosting the Croxteth community.

Croxteth Hall transformation

Croxteth Hall

A Centre of Excellence

As well as the development plans, Lawrence Kenwright’s vision will see local people from the Croxteth area given the chance to train and learn skills within the hospitality sector.

A centre of excellence will be created with a vision of training future Signature Living employees, which will also help boost employment figures. Lawrence said:

“There are a lot of unemployed people in Croxteth, we have just taken on 30 people from there in the last six months and some of them are our best workers.

“This means people from Croxteth could work in our sites in Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and all these great cities – they can move up the chain to be anything they want to be, anywhere they want to be.”

Signature Living pride themselves on looking after their workers and ensuring they get the best opportunities available.

Giving Back to the Community

The Signature Living boss has also promised that if his proposals are successful, 33% of its pre-tax profits would go directly to local people in the form of charitable donation.  This has been estimated to around £500,000 per year.

Lawrence has said:

“The idea would be to set up a charitable board of six people and unlike other grant funding for charities, this will be used for whatever we want to use it for and will be more about people – it will be a quick and easy process.”

The Plans

Signature Living have proposed to transform Croxteth Hall into a luxurious hotel, spa and wedding venue.

Set to take just one year to complete, the plans include a unique Signature Living stamp with ‘glamping’ and ‘Hansel and Gretal treehouse’ rooms.

These ambitious plans are typical of Signature Living and Lawrence’s ambition to create a successful hotel and wedding venue outside of the city centre:

“You’ve got to have an edge – you can’t just open and say we are here – it’s got to be something that is different from everywhere else – but these are not things we can do without the say so of the council.”

Weddings are a huge part of the amazing new plans.

Croxteth is already a functioning wedding venue, however, currently they are few and far between. Lawrence sees the number of weddings per year increasing from 20 to 200.

He also stated that the addition of a luxury hotel will increase the appeal for wedding planners, as guests will have somewhere to stay afterwards.

Croxteth Hall transformation

Croxteth Hall

The Future of Croxteth

Signature Living are passionate about saving an asset like Croxteth Hall, redeveloping it for the better and opening it for the local community.

Currently, Croxteth Hall is open just 25% of the time and they charge £6 to get in, when it’s a hotel it will be open to everyone all the time.

“All the good stuff with the wood panelled walls, paintings and great views – that will all be open to the public – these places can’t be museums anymore as there isn’t the funding for them.”

Liverpool council have made it very clear that they will only hear bids that respect the listed status of the building and have a strong vision of maintaining the heritage of the site. They have also stated the importance of maintaining public access to the grounds.

Lawrence is also very passionate about this:

“It will be interesting to see if the others have the same understanding of listed buildings that we do – when it comes to taking listed buildings from semi-dereliction to hotels, I don’t know anyone that does what we do in the UK.”

The council is currently inviting developers to put their ideas forward and it is hoped a bid could be selected within three months.

Signature Group Hosts Recruitment Day to Find the Next Stars of The Garden of Eden

Signature Careers has continued to revolutionise the recruitment process with another fun filled and unique assessment day. This time, the search was on for outstanding catering and banqueting staff for the beautiful and ever popular Garden of Eden venue, situated on the rooftop of The Shankly Hotel.

Signature Living is dedicated to finding the best staff for all our iconic business ventures. We know that it is our employees who make Signature Group the benchmark for the hospitality sector and we’re extremely proud of the high quality of staff that choose to join the Signature family.

Having revolutionised the accommodation and hospitality market, we’re now paving the way for a better process to find the employees that can help us deliver the amazing service we’re known for.

Our assessment days help us to see past a one-page CV and a pressure-filled interview to get the very best out of the hopeful applicants.

The Assessment Day

Louise Riley, Recruitment Manager for Signature Group, organised and orchestrated the day, leading the potential recruits through a series of tasks to demonstrate their suitability for life as a representative of the sought-after venue.

Signature Careers recruitment day

Louise was joined by C&B manager Lucy Woodford, Bar Manager Adam Taylor and Eden Supervisor Michelle Hopper to help find the future Signature Stars. The first task saw the candidates create mood boards that they think represented Signature Group, and the team at Table One stole the show with their observations on the importance of food and beverages at Eden. Our iconic and amazing Afternoon Teas are a stand-out fixture at all our developments and the importance of these was demonstrated incredibly well by Table One.

Signature Careers recruitment day

The next part of the lively session was an interactive questionnaire. Each hopeful was given a task to identify key members of Eden’s, and The Shankly Hotel’s, team and find one interesting, unusual or unknown fact about that person.

The hotel’s General Manager was the first piece of the puzzle, and the applicants were delighted to discover Duncan Stewart has a penchant for dressing as The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Frank-N-Furter. Wedding Co-ordinator Ciara Martin was harder to crack and only one team managed to find out she has a love for playing the drums.

A Venue to be Proud of

The Garden of Eden is the ultimate rooftop venue for events, boasting unrestricted views across the city of Liverpool with a stunning and elegant backdrop to weddings, conferences, parties, showers and Afternoon Teas.

With a 360-degree glass exterior, a rooftop garden that has to be seen to be believed and plans in place for a 100ft outdoor slide, Eden is the perfect place for a magical and truly unforgettable time.

For a venue as magnificent as Eden, Signature Group needs the highest calibre of staff to ensure our guests receive only the best service and care throughout their journey with us. From making sure drinks never go unfilled, plates never go empty and requests are fulfilled to helping deliver a truly unforgettable experience, our C&B staff are the pinnacle of excellent service.

Signature Group

Since our conception in 2008, Signature Group has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most successful developers and hospitality businesses in the country. Throughout our journey, our core values of creating real value for our guests and building long-term relationships have not changed, helping us to fuel our vision and bringing together the very best teams to do so.
