Best ways to destress

The 7 Best Ways to Destress from Work

From torturous tasks to mundane memos, a lot of us take our work home with us and that means we take our stresses home too. Despite the amount of motivational Instagram accounts that say we need to “hustle 24-hours a day,” it’s important to take a step back, pause and unwind. Rather than making the most of our time spent not at work, we instead waste our time on stress and tension.

Not sure how to destress? From meditation to mindfulness, here’s our pick of the best ways to destress from work.

1.Create a Post-Work Routine

Having a post-work routine is a wonderful way to help yourself unwind and destress after a hectic day at work. Not sure how to destress? A post-work routine does the work for you, so you don’t have to.

Your routine may consist of something as simple as taking a deep breath but, no matter what it is, make it a habit and watch your post-work stress disappear.

Create a post-work routine and re-focus your attention to your existence outside of work.

2. Enjoy Your Commute Home

Nobody enjoys their torturous commute to work by virtue of what it is, but you can enjoy your commute home. Rather than being another obstacle to overcome before you can unwind, your commute home, be it on a train or a bus or in a car, can be pleasurable.

Loosen your tie and loosen up by listening to a podcast or audiobook, or simply celebrate the fact that you’re going home. Nevertheless, your commute home doesn’t have to be stressful when it can be enjoyable.

3. Meditate

Even if you love your job, the pressure of deadlines and the tenseness of workplace stresses can create unwanted stress. So, when you come home from work, you want to relax and destress; but it’s not always as easy as it seems.

When you return home, though you may want to unwind and relax, your brain may not want to. That’s where meditation can become a valuable tool. Meditation can help you achieve a peaceful state of mind and, if you feel that the urge to work is too robust to repress, you can use the time to deal with your stressors so that you feel productive – if you must.

For those of you who don’t know how to destress, meditation is an ideal way to find inner peace.

4. Mute the WhatsApp Group

What started out as a useful way to organise work drinks or a co-worker’s baby shower has now turned into an extension of your desk. The continuous spew of notifications from your co-workers about their stresses is guaranteed to add to your own problems.

So, when you clock out, make sure you mute that WhatsApp group. Plus, it stops you from saying something you seriously shouldn’t have said.

5. Stop Feeling Guilty About Doing Nothing

Doing nothing is often unfairly labelled as being lazy, but in fact it’s probably the best way to destress sometimes.

Most of us spend our time either at work, commuting to and from work or thinking about work, so, why is it then that when work doesn’t cross our minds for a matter of minutes we feel an horrendous sense of guilt?

Richard Branson once said that “there is no reason why people can’t work less hours and be equally – if not more – effective.” So, if it’s good enough for Branson then it’s good enough for you.

6. Exercise

Whether it’s a brisk walk or a front room workout, exercise is one of the best ways to destress from the 9-5.

Exercise releases endorphins that are guaranteed to make you feel happier and more positive and therefore, a lot less stressed.

So, the next time you feel stressed, do some exercise and sweat your troubles away.

7. Take a Relaxing Bath

One of the best ways to destress is to wash away the tension from your body. Try a lovely, long bath to help your muscles unwind followed by a cool splash of cold water to liven you up.

So, the next time you’re wondering how to destress, spark some aromatic candles, pour yourself a drink and let the water work its magic.

You certainly wont regret it.
